A Few Swings Away: Bearcats Golf Season Almost Complete

By John Syms, Part-time Staff Writer

The Saint Vincent Men’s Golf Team is two tournaments away from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship. On March 27, the Bearcats placed first out of four teams at the Geneva College Golf Invitational at the Connoquenessing Country Club, and on March 30, they placed fifth out of eleven teams at the Grove City College Invitational. One week later, on April 5, the Bearcats would place third of twelve teams at the Moravian College Golf Classic in Bethlehem, Pa. Before the PAC Championship, they will compete at the Peter C. Rossin Memorial tournament on April 17 at Washington and Jefferson College.

Unlike other sports, men’s golf in the PAC takes place both in the fall and in the spring. Over the fall of 2022, the Bearcats would finish fifth of eight teams in the first two rounds of the PAC championship. As of now, the team will play the conference championship’s final two rounds on April 21 and 22. Saint Vincent College still has a chance to win the tournament, but they would have to overcome both Alleghany College and Westminster.

Golfer Brevin Urso, junior mechanical engineering major, says he is excited for the conference showdown.

“I had a pretty good season last year, but in the two rounds in the fall I didn’t play all that great, so I am definitely hoping to turn things around and post a little bit better of a score in the spring,” Urso said, as the team currently has 332 points scored from the fall.

“The season going on for me is pretty well. I placed top ten in our first two tournaments in the spring, and this previous one I think I was tied for twenty-first, which was a little bigger of a tournament because at Grove City they bring a lot more schools there,” Urso said.

Urso was in the top ten in birdies scored. On March 20, Urso was voted Bearcat of the Week for his performance at the Marietta College Pioneer Classic, as he placed seventh overall and scored a team best score of 78. Back in the fall of 2022, Urso and the team placed first overall at the Bearcat Golf Invitational as they defeated Grove City and Waynesburg, and Urso had the best score in the competition with 76 points.

The team is currently two weeks away from the two-day PAC championship held at Mill Creek in Boardman, Ohio. For more information about the Bearcats golf team, visit https://athletics.stvincent.edu/sports/mens-golf.
